FAQ

Will I be able to take any extra credit quizzes?

Yes. You have the option of taking any or all of the Extra Credit Quizzes.

Will I be able to see my score after each attempt?

Yes. You will see the quiz title, Attempt, Written (date and time), Submission View, Attempt Score, and Overall Grade (first or second attempt).

Where can I view my quiz grade?

If you've just taken your quiz, you will have the option to "View Results." From this results page, you can review all quiz grades from the "Return to Scores" link. You can also click the Quizzes link from the homepage or side navigation, click the "View scores for quizzes" radio button and see all of your quiz scores. Finally, you can view all of your scores for the course from Grades.

When I'm finished with a quiz do I have to submit it?

Yes. You must click 'Submit Quiz' to receive credit.

When I take a quiz, do I have to save each answer?

Yes. It is recommended that you save your response as you complete each question. For each question, there is a "Save" button. Clicking the "Save" button saves your response to that question. You can save each question as many times as you wish. When you navigate to another page of the quiz by using the right and left arrows, all your questions on the current page will be saved. In this course, you will normally see about 10 questions per page.

When I click on the quiz title, what will I see?

You'll see the quiz Summary tab that includes the current time, your name, a Description of the quiz, and Quiz Specifics (Quiz Period, Time Allowed, Attempts: number Allowed and number Completed).
When you click the Submissions tab, you'll see your name, the number of attempts you've made on this quiz, and the Class Average.

When you click the Reports tab, you'll see "There are no reports available."

When I begin a quiz, what will I see?

You will see the quiz title, Time Limit, Time Left, Quiz Info (includes your name, Attempt number, Questions - total questions on the quiz with check boxes of the questions you've answered, number of pages on the quiz and Legend), Page number, Question number, forward and backward arrows, Save All Responses, and Go To Submit Quiz. Remember you can also view a box, Quiz Status, lower left to see if your answer has been saved.

What if I think a quiz question didn't give me credit for what I believe is a correct answer?

Locate what you believe to be the correct answer in the material. Cite that location and contact the instructor.

What if I mistakenly hit the Submit Quiz button before I have completed the quiz?

You will get:

Is there a set schedule for quizzes?

No. You have to take the Course Information Quiz first, but that's the only restriction. After that you may take the quizzes in any order.

You can also work at your own pace, but you must finish within the 10-week period.

If I skip a question, can I go back and answer it later?

Yes. You can answer questions in any order. Also, before submitting the quiz, you will have the opportunity to return to questions that you may have missed or simply did not answer.

If I make a second attempt on a quiz, is it the same as the first one?

No. The questions may be different. Additionally, the answer order may be different.

If I get a better grade on the second attempt of a quiz, will that be my final score?

No, the final score will be the average of the two attempts.

How will I know if I have a quiz to take?

On the Course Home page, you have an Updates box on the lower left. If there are quizzes available, you will see a (number) Quiz available link. Clicking this link will take you to Quizzing Home. On this page you will see linked quiz titles followed by when it is available.

Also you can click the Quizzes tab upper left scarlet navigation bar. This takes you to the Quizzes home page. Any available quizzes will be hyperlinked.

How much time is allotted for each quiz?

Time allowed varies, but you will find it listed on the Quizzes page (found though the Quizzes link) and it will also be listed in the quiz instructions before you begin an individual quiz.

How many quizzes are there?

For Certificate 1, there will be six REQUIRED Certificate Quizzes: one quiz for general Course Information and one each for the modules listed below:

I) Soils, II) Sands, III) Irrigation, IV) Drainage, and V) Field Renovation.

There are also five Extra Credit Quizzes that you have the OPTION of taking.

For Certificate 2, there will be 4 REQUIRED Certificate Quizzes: one quiz for general Course Information and one each for the modules listed below:

I) Turfgrasses for Athletic Fields, II) Principles of Turfgrass Establishment, and III) Turfgrass Establishment Methods.

There are also three Extra Credit Quizzes that you have the OPTION of taking.

How many questions are on each quiz?

The number of questions per quiz may vary, but it will be listed in the quiz instructions before you begin an individual quiz.

How many points is each quiz worth?

The points for each quiz varies; however, you will see the number of points a quiz is worth listed in the quiz instructions before you begin an individual quiz.

Extra credit quizzes are worth 3 points.

If you check Grades (upper left scarlet navigation bar), you can see the number of points possible for each quiz, as well as the number of points you've earned to date.

How many attempts can I make on each quiz?

Most quizzes can be attempted two times, with the score average recorded.

Extra credit quizzes can only be attempted once.

Remember that quiz attempts are VARIABLE, but this information is available to you at the beginning of each quiz.

How long will the window for taking a quiz be open?

Quizzes are Always Available, but you must take the quiz on Course Information before you can take any of the others. This is to be sure you understand how the course is set up.

How do I move on to the next question?

Click the forward arrow to move to the next question or page. Click the back arrow to move to the previous question/page.

To move to another question, you can also use the box on the left that indicates whether an answer has been saved or not. The question numbers are linked to the appropriate question. Simply selection the question you want.

You can also scroll up/down to questions that appear on the same page.

How do I know which section a quiz covers?

Both the module section and its quiz have the same title.

How do I know the window for a particular quiz is open?

If a quiz is available, on the summary tab, on the first line you will see the time on the left and the link 'Start Quiz!' on the right.

How do I know if my quiz submission was successful?

After clicking the Submit Quiz button, you will see your Attempt, Written: (date & time), Submission View followed by:

Your quiz has been submitted successfully.

Section number and each question. Your results will include the question number, points received/points possible, question, possible responses, and Comment.

How do I know if my answer has been saved?

You can view a box, Quiz Status, lower left. If your answer has been saved, you will see Page (number) Saved.

Also, you will see a Quiz Info box with icons for each question on the left side of your screen. When an answer has been saved, the icon will appear bold. When it is not saved, it appears shadowed or gray. Refer to the Legend in the Quiz Info box for a graphic representation.

How do I know how many attempts I've made or have left?

The number of attempts available and the number of attempts made is listed on the Quizzes page (found though the Quizzes link).

How do I begin a quiz?

First, click the Quizzes link in the upper left red navigation bar. This takes you to Quizzing Home. There you will see a list of quizzes. Click the title of the quiz you wish to take. If a quiz is available, on the summary tab, on the first line you will see the time on the left and the link 'Start Quiz!' on the right.

Can I view my quiz grade?

Yes. You will be able to view your grade as soon as you've submitted your quiz.

Can I still submit answers if the time limit has expired?

You can click on a question and choose a response, but the answer will not be saved. You will see the Warning: "The time limit for this Quiz has been exceeded."

Can I review a quiz I've already taken?

To view the summary results of a quiz, click on the Completed hyperlink under Attempts.

Can I retake a quiz if I've exceeded the time limit?

Quiz attempts that exceed the time limit will be automatically submitted, including any answers you've saved. You can make an additional attempt, if you have one available.

Can I retake a quiz if I'm not satisfied with my grade?

Yes. You can make up to 2 attempts on most quizzes, but the number of attempts is VARIABLE. Remember that when you make more than 1 attempt, your grade will be the average of the attempts.

Information regarding the number of attempts on a given quiz will be given at the beginning of each quiz.

Please note that extra credit quizzes are only available for 1 attempt each.

Can I exceed the time limit?

Once the allocated time period that was set for this quiz expires, you are required to SUBMIT your quiz responses. NOTE: Any responses that you have not saved before the time limit expires will not be submitted.

Will I be able to do any extra credit assignments?

No, but you will be able to take extra credit quizzes.

When will my submission be graded?

Grading will vary based on the availability of the instructor. If you have concerns regarding the grading of an assignment, contact your instructor.

What do I do if I submit my assignment in the wrong Dropbox?

You should resubmit your assignment in the correct dropbox and contact the instructor. Only the instructor can remove a submission from the wrong dropbox.

How will I know my submission has been graded?

You will receive a private reply with feedback. Your score will appear in Grades, available only to you.

How do I submit an assignment to the class Dropbox?

Submitting to the Dropbox

  1. Click on "Dropbox" on the course home page, upper left navigation bar.
  2. Click the appropriate Assignment title from the Dropbox list.
  3. Click the Browse button and locate your assignment file on your hard drive.
  4. Enter your name, assignment number, and title of your Assignment in the Description box.
  5. Then, click the Upload button.
  6. When the upload is complete, you will see a Results window with Uploaded by, Folder, File name, Date, Time, File Size and "(file name) uploaded successfully."
  7. You can view your submissions by clicking the History button. Here you will see Assignment name, a list of each file you submitted, your Comments, and the date and time Submitted. You can also view the document you submitted.
  8. If you select the wrong file, you have the option to Cancel your submission. This returns you to the Dropbox list of assignments. WARNING: Once submitted, you can't return to change your work; however, you can make a second, or even a third submission, if necessary.
  9. After submitting an assignment to the Dropbox, you will receive an email similar to the example you see below:

How do I make sure that the instructor will receive my dropbox assignment?

There are 2 important ways to make sure that your instructor will receive your assignment:

Use appropriate file names.

When submitting documents (whether uploading a document to the dropbox or attaching a file to a discussion post), use only letters and numbers (no symbols such as %, &, ", or ') in file names.

Complete all steps of the process.

When using the dropbox to submit assignments, always make sure you see the File Submission Successful message on screen before leaving the dropbox area. When using the dropbox, you will first locate the all files you wish to submit, then upload them, and finally, submit them.

How do I know when I can submit my assignments to the Dropbox?

In the upper left scarlet navigation bar, there is a Dropbox link. Click it. On this page you will see a list of Assignment titles followed by "Deadline: date," if assignments can be submitted, or "Opens: date," if they cannot. If there are no deadline restrictions, there may be no date at all. The Assignment title will be linked if submissions can be made.

Can I view all of my assignment submissions at one time?

You can view all assignments submitted to each dropbox. Go to Dropbox and click the assignment title you wish to view. In the Drop Off Files window, click the History button, lower left. In the Dropoff History window you will see a list of the assignments you've submitted as well as your Comments and Submitted (date and time).

Can I edit a submission to the Dropbox?

No, but you can edit an assignment and then resubmit it. Be sure to include some indication that the assignment has been edited in the title line, for example "edited assignment 2" or "resubmission of assignment 2."

What is the Dropbox?

Use the Dropbox to submit assignments online by uploading files to folders where your instructor can pick them up and post feedback.

Where do I find the podcasts (the content of the course)?

You can link to the Podcasts from Content located upper left, scarlet navigation bar. Click the Certificate Home link. As you scroll down the page you'll see the course Learning Modules listed. Podcasts are individually listed as Part 1, Part 2, etc. Click the desired link.

Where do I find quizzes?

Quizzes is located in the upper, scarlet navigation bar.

Where do I find my grades?

Grades is located in the upper, scarlet navigation bar.

You can also view your grades from the Welcome Box under My Settings and the link View my progress. When you click the link a new window titled User Progress opens.

Select the tool you'd like to view, in this case, Grades, then click the Apply button.

Where can I find the Course Syllabus?

While there is no page labeled "Course Syllabus," information about the course is found on Course Home (upper, left, scarlet navigation bar) in the Sports Turf Management Certificate box (large box, right). It is essentially the course syllabus.

When is the certificate offered?

Ohio State Sports Turf Management is offered at all times during the academic year. The only requirement is that each certificate be completed within a 10 week period.

What if I don't understand the information I've heard and seen in the podcasts?

You may listen and study the podcasts as many times as needed. Additionally, there are topic specific glossary links provided for each section to help you learn any unfamiliar terms associated with new material. You will need to study the information presented in the podcasts to do well on the quizzes.

What grade do I have to get to pass?

An overall grade average of 70 percent or greater is required for successful completion of the course.

What does the notation of "Distinction" on a certificate mean?

The student has achieved an average equal or greater than 94 percent and passed with Distinction, which has been noted on the certificate.

Is this an introductory course?

The OSU Sports Turf Management Certificate Course was developed to give sports field industry personnel a chance to start or continue their education in sports turf management.

Is there a syllabus for this course?

There is no page labeled "syllabus," but on Course Home (upper, left, scarlet navigation bar) the Sports Turf Management Certificate box (large box, right) is essentially the course syllabus.

How is the course organized?

For Certificate 1, the certificate is organized into 5 modules. The modules of the certificate are I) Soils, II) Sands, III) Irrigation, IV) Drainage, and V) Field Renovation.

How is the course graded?

The course grade is based on the an overall quiz and assignment average of 70 percent or greater. If the student achieves an average equal or greater than 94 percent, the student will pass with distinction, which will be noted on the certificate.

Upon completion of each module, if a passing grade is not achieved or there is a desire to achieve a grade of "distinction", the opportunity exists to further view and study topics under "Extra Credit". A quiz for each topic is provided (a maximum of 3 bonus points for each topic).

How do I get help with course content?

You will be responsible for initiating contact and for being persistent when you need additional help. Send e-mail to the instructor. You can also telephone the instructor. If on the Columbus campus, see the instructor. Make an appointment for one-to-one help with the course.

How can I contact the Help Desk?

You can contact the Help Desk by telephone (614-688-HELP).

If it is necessary to contact the Help Desk, be sure to identify yourself as a Special Course student. They may not be able to assist you and might need to forward your problem to specific personnel.

How are the points divided?

For Certificate 1, there is 1 required Course Information quiz. This quiz is not worth any points, but must be completed with at least a 70% passing grade before you can take any other course quizzes.

There are 5 compulsory quizzes, worth 10 points each and 5 assignments worth 10 points each for a certificate total of 100 points. There are also 5 extra credit quizzes, worth 3 points each.

For Certificate 2, there is 1 required Course Information quiz. This quiz is not worth any points, but must be completed with at least a 70% passing grade before you can take any other course quizzes.

There are 3 compulsory quizzes, worth 20 points each and 3 assignments worth a total of 40 points for a certificate total of 100 points. There are also 3 extra credit quizzes, worth 3 points each.

For Certificate 3, there is 1 required Course Information quiz. This quiz is not worth any points, but must be completed with at least a 70% passing grade before you can take any other course quizzes.

There are 3 compulsory quizzes, worth 20 points each and 3 assignments worth a total of 40 points for a certificate total of 100 points. There are also 2 extra credit quizzes and 1 extra credit assignment, worth 3 points each.

For Certificate 4, there is 1 required Course Information quiz. This quiz is not worth any points, but must be completed with at least a 70% passing grade before you can take any other course quizzes.

There are 4 compulsory quizzes, worth 15 points each and 4 assignments worth a total of 40 points for a certificate total of 100 points. There are also 4 extra credit quizzes worth 3 points each.

Do I have a schedule to follow to complete my course work?

No. Each student may work at their own pace but the certificate must be completed within 10 weeks.

Additionally, although the modules are provided in a logical order, the student can complete the modules in the order they prefer.

Can I use an email account other than the one I used at registration?

No. All course related correspondence will go through your OSU guest account that is forwarded to the email account you used to register for this course.

YOU CANNOT USE AN EMAIL ACCOUNT OTHER THAN THE ONE YOU SUBMITTED FOR REGISTRATION.

Can I earn extra credit if I'm unhappy with my grade?

Yes. The opportunity exists to further view and study topics under the "Extra Credit Section." A quiz for each topic is provided (a maximum of 3 bonus points for each topic).

Extra credit can be earned to achieve either a passing grade or to reach the level of "Distinction."

In Certificate 3 there is one assignment for which extra credit can be earned.

Can I begin the course at any time?

Yes. Sports Turf Management certificates can be started at any time. The only requirement is that it be completed within a 10 week period.

Are there any course activities that would require me to be on campus?

No. The course is completely online. You won't have to be on campus at all.

Are there any books required for this course?

No. All of the information you need will be online and available through the podcasts or the glossary links.

Is it necessary to Logout when I'm finished with a session in Carmen?

Yes. It is necessary to logout each time you finish a session to prevent use of your account by unauthorized persons. You will see the specific instructions below: You are NOT COMPLETELY LOGGED OUT yet!

I'm having trouble inside the course. What should I do?

Most technical issues are addressed in Carmen Help for Students or in the Help link in the upper right, pale gray navigation bar. Common problems are addressed in Troubleshooting. If these resources are not helpful, you can contact the course instructor.

I'm having problems with my browser - it won't show some of the material in Carmen. Why?

Are you using a recommended browser for Carmen? Recommended and supported browsers change. Be sure to check this information if you experience difficulties. For more information, see supported browsers.

To ensure satisfaction with your Carmen courses, it is essential that you use a fully supported browser. Browser choice is limited to a few common brands; other browsers may work, but full functionality cannot be guaranteed.

If you are using a browser other than the ones listed below, you may discover problems that can neither be confirmed nor supported by the help desk. Should you encounter problems with an unsupported browser, your only recourse is to move to a fully supported browser.

I don't feel comfortable working within Carmen. Is there some place I can get help?

Yes. You can begin from the login page or from Carmen Help for Students. You can also use the Help link in the upper right, pale gray navigation bar.
